cool software
Adium (Mac only) -
One of the finest free instant messaging system around. Tons of user-submitted add-ons, easy to use. I think video capabilities are coming.. someday.
Firefox -
If you haven't downloaded Firefox yet, then.. you're probably using Chrome. More secure, more innovative, follows web standard, has
lots of cool plugins and addons. Developers: be sure to get Firebug as well.
Pixen (Mac only) -
For those of you who like spending hours at a time doing pixel art or making icons, this is an application for you.

for web design ideas. I've tried to mimic the site design, but never have the patience to finish. Way too much detail!
